In celebration of Earth Day, the Whitland Area Neighborhood Association (WANA) is hosting one of its two annual creek clean ups on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Join your neighbors for coffee, donuts, water and our efforts to care for own beautiful natural resource, the Kingfisher Branch Creek along Rolland Road.
Our goal is to collect trash and debris in and around the creek along Rolland Road (Kingfisher Branch) as well as increase erosion control around the Carden Bridge. We will not be trimming trees or bushes. Bring boots/waders/ gloves. Children older than age 10 are welcome if accompanied by their parent(s). We need some strong adults to help place the material for erosion control. Trash bags will be provided.
In case of inclement weather, WANA will send an email to the WANA Google Group the morning of the event and reschedule for the following Saturday.
We look forward to seeing you next Saturday at the Carden Bridge!

Happy April, WANA neighbors!
Please find attached our first newsletter of 2023. Thank you to Betsy Lipschutz and Chuck Sherrill for their amazing efforts on this edition.

Greetings, Neighbors!
WANA has organized an Ice Cream Social night where we hope folks will gather to purchase a treat from Bradley’s Creamery. This food truck loves visiting our amazing neighborhood, so let’s show them our love!
As kids are starting back to school, let’s celebrate and beat the heat. In conjunction with the ice cream truck setup on Monday, Aug. 15th (5:30 – 7:30), we hope you’ll consider donating school supplies to benefit MNPS and DG PENCIL Box. Help Stock the PENCIL Box! Attached to this email you will find our event flyer and the current “most wanted” list for teachers supplied by PENCIL Box. To read more about this organization, including an Amazon link directly to the supplies requested, use the links below.
So, come out for a sweet treat and bring any new school supplies you wish to donate to a fantastic cause. We’ll have collection bins near the truck at the corner of Carden & Whitland as well as an envelope if you’d like to donate money; all supplies will be delivered to PENCIL Box later in the week. Any funds received from you will be used to purchase additional items on the most wanted list to stock the store where Metro teachers shop for FREE. Thank you advance for your generosity!

Postponed: Due to circumstances outside of our control the food truck night has been postponed to a future date (to be determined).

Where:Right here at the Carden Bridge
When:Sunday, December 12th at 3:30 pm
What: A family gathering to enjoy holiday cheer together over some warm winter beverages with fire pits and S’mores.
Mark your calendars for a week from this Sunday, December 12th at 3:30 pm for this year’s WANA Holiday Party. Due to the pandemic and possible risks we have decided to have an outdoor gathering at Mary Catherine Strobel Park at the end of Carden at the bridge at 3:30 on the 12th. Since outside we hope to observe some reasonable social distancing and fresh air should help mitigate risks. WANA will provide a couple of fire pits blazing, all of the makings for S’mores, and we will have a variety of warm/hot drinks including hot chocolate, hot cider, and an adult hot toddy for those over 21 that choose an adult beverage. This is a full family event so bring the kids, get a S’more or two, and enjoy a warm drink while celebrating the season with other WANA folks. Hopefully the weather will comply, the Titans will be finished with a victory, and in the event of dangerous weather we will address on the 11th or 12th. WANA assumes it will be a chilly day so dress accordingly.

Additionally, this coming Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th will be our annual dumpster day. Two 40 yard dumpsters will show up early to mid afternoon on Friday the 24th, they will be located on Whitland Avenue in front of 3750 Whitland (near Carden intersection) and in front of 3701 Whitland Avenue (near Craighead intersection), and they will be taken away mid afternoon on Saturday (Waste Management is a bit imprecise on their arrival and take away times). These dumpster surprisingly typically fill up very fast so make definitive plans to arrive with waste Friday afternoon or as early as possible on Saturday morning. Once full we will close the dumpsters and hopefully Waste Management will come and go at the appropriate times. No chemicals, paints, or electric appliances are allowed in the dumpsters.
Hope all are remaining safe during our extended pandemic limitations. Come on back normal life soon – please !!

Meet at the Carden bridge on Rolland. Bring loppers, trimmers, and hand saws if you can. We will pick up trash, clear debris, and cut back the Privet and other invasive plants along the creek. Cold bottled water will be available and please bring a mask, but, we will practice social distancing as cautiously as possible and work singularly to avoid issue. This is probably not an event for children and our alternate date in the event of heavy rain or high water is the following Saturday the 24th at the same time. If bad weather or high water a cancellation notice will go out over the Google Groups.

The 4th of July 2020 will be remembered for many years as the year we couldn't have a party due to the Caronaviris. However, a few residents went all the way with decorations and a family events on their front yards. If we had awards I think the top home would be the winner.. Photos from Cyril Stewart.

Next Friday on June 12th, WANA has arranged for two food trucks to come to the top of Carden Ave. at Whitland Ave from 4:30 to 7:30.
Califarmia fresh California cuisine using local ingredients will provide the main food. Califarmia uses a web based link for its orders and payments (credit cards only) that can be ordered a few days in advance or during its time at Carden on Friday evening.
Bradley’s Creamery will provide ice cream for dessert. Bradley’s also has a link that will be provided and they will accept walk up orders and cash/credit cards.
WANA has arranged this event for your convenience. Hopefully it will be fun and yummy, and we continue to encourage social distancing. This event is a pickup, maybe mingle a little, and take home your dinner/dessert situation. We look forward to this fun option next Friday.

This coming Saturday we are going to have an informal creek clean up starting at 10:00 AM. In order to observe social distancing we will not be providing any food or drink and we will split up with trash bags for the majority of the clean up. There may be a little cutting of brush around the Leonard/Rolland intersection. I suspect if several show up to assist we can probably finish way prior to noon.
Check out the upcoming Dog Show on our Facebook.com/
Stay safe and I hope to see some of you this coming Saturday morning at 10:00 am at the Carden bridge.

This was the flood a few days ago. Now we need to clean up the trash that was left behind

If you are out walking in Easter can you find the beautiful white azaleas under the magnificent dogwood in full bloom. It’s in the heart of WANA.

Dear WANA Neighbors,
COVID-19 is having an unprecedented impact on the world and our country. If you are an older member of our community and feel that you could use some assistance, whether simply taking trash cans out and back or you have more urgent needs like the dropping off of food, please consider this Google groups as a forum in which you can reach out for help. Our community has shown time again that we are there to help one another, and the Google Group could function as a way to match those needing help and those able to do so. Find the GoogleGroup.com and select Whitland. If you have not registered yet then go to Whitland.org, click on the Google Group tab, and fill in the required information. Your request will be approved and you can then post information on the Google Group. The Google Group is for Whitland Residents only.
Best regards
Steve Curnutte, President, Whitland Area Neighborhood Association

That's all for this year.

Yard Sale
Our yard sales participated this year and reported good crowds of shoppers and sales. We were also fortunate to have a dumpster from Metro for those large bulk items as well as Goodwill involved. Thank you to Denise Hawkins for organizing both on our behalf. This event involves lots of moving pieces to both ensure there is adequate promotion to ensure we get enough traffic as well as facilitation to align and organize all of the third parties involved. Thank you to the Board for support.
Fence at Whitland and Bowling
Many neighbors have complained about the fence erected at the corner of Whitland and Bowling. It violates Codes by being too close to the sidewalk as well as being too tall. This creates safety issues for cars, bikes, and pedestrians. The Whitland Area Neighborhood Association has, as have several neighbors, contacted the city and requested that the fence be brought into compliance with Metro Codes.
Movies by the Creek
Saturday, September 7th
Our annual fall Movies by the Creek featured two showings for young and old. Our early movie was Coco and the late show featured To Kill A Mockingbird. Movie candy, beverages, and popcorn were provided to round out the experience and enhance an already enjoyable evening.
Mutt Mitt Box
A new Mutt Mitt box with dog waste bags was installed just to the left of the main entrance into Brighton Close. Please use at your convenience and dispose of the used bags appropriately.
Fall Creek Cleanup
The fall Creek Cleanup is scheduled for the morning of October 26th from 9:00-12:00. In addition to our normal invasive plant removal and trash cleanup, we plan to install some new plants and ground cover near the new erosion control area by the Craighead Spring (where the swing used to be). This is always a spirited event and we encourage as many possible to join for the cleanup. Keeping the creek under control benefits our whole community.
Halloween Celebration and Costume Judging
WANA will again have its annual Halloween celebration and costume contest at the end of Carden near Mary Catherine Strobel Park on Halloween. There will be awards for best costumes based on age-ranges. This has historically been a fun and well-attended event and a great way to kick off the night. Costume judging will begin at 5:00.
WANA Youth Committee
WANA is setting up a Youth Committee for high-school aged kids living in WANA. This is an effort to get our neighborhood young persons involved in our community’s activities like the Creek Clean Up. It is being spearheaded by Oscar Fox. If you wish to learn more or are interested in learning more, please email Oscar directly at williamfox21@email.usn.org.
WANA DUES

On Saturday, September 21st, from 8am until noon, WANA will be supporting a number of our neighbors having yard sales. We encourage you to join the fun. Some will be selling on Friday as well. There are always things that don't sale. So, WANA has arranged for a Goodwill Truck to be in the parking lot of Blakemore United Methodist Church between 1:00 and 2:30.Then there are things not good enough for Goodwill. WANA has arranged with Metro Nashville to have a dumpster on Whitland, in front of 3800 Whitland, between 8:00am-1:00pm.We always seem to overflow the one dumpster so a second dumpster has been ordered (paid for by your dues) to be located at the corner of Whitland and Wilson. It will probably be there from Friday until sometime Monday. We hope you enjoy the yard sales and encourage you to get with your neighbors and have a hot dog and chips picnic. Dear Whitland Neighbors
This notice contains as much information as possible about the 4th July on Whitland Avenue event
which will take place beginning at 11 AM on Thursday, the 4th of July, 2019. This is the 42nd year of this annual fun-filled family celebration which involves a patriotic program with speaker, a wonderful
musical presentation, fellowship, & family-styled picnic. If you have never attended before, I can
promise that you will not be disappointed!
This notice also serves as a courtesy to inform you that on-street parking will be TEMPORARILY
restricted in the area of Whitland Avenue on Thursday, 4 July 2019 from approximately 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM that day. Please plan to park your vehicle in an alternate location on the event date. Any
vehicles left in NO PARKING areas during the times listed above will be ticketed and towed at owners' expense. (please refer to attached map).
We begin setting up for this event on Wednesday, the 3rd July. Although the time is not certain, Crown Tent & Awning will be here sometime during the day (most likely afternoon) of July 3rd to install the
large tent at the very small block between West End Avenue & Whitland Avenue at Carden. The tent will be there for the duration of the event and will not be removed by the tent company until the
morning of Friday, July 5th (see attached map please)
Blinker Lite provides us with barricades for street closures. They will be placed at West End Avenue so that no cars can enter Carden Avenue from West End where the tent is installed. There will also be
barricades at the intersection of Whitland & Cantrell on the day of the event {4th July) and also at the
intersection of Whitland & Craighead Avenue the day of the event. This is to insure the safety of all the guests, as the event primarily takes place between these blocks on Whitland Avenue {please refer to
attached map). The Whitland barricades are removed once the site is cleaned up and everyone has
safely left the event. The barricades where the large tent is located (see map) will not be removed until the tent is removed (Friday AM, July 5, 2019).
We will have one port-a-potty available on-site (see map for its location). Since this is a neighborhood event, if you see anyone in need, please offer them assistance at your home.
We employ Comprehensive Security for the safety of our guests and security at our event. There will be two officers present at all times during the day of the event. Contact telephone number for their office is (615) 485-0800. One of the officers on duty that day can assist you whenever needed.
Other important contact information you need here:

Additional Comments about Parking
While this is a neighborhood event and most guests walk to the event, if you have relatives or close friends planning on attending, just make sure they are aware of the temporary street closure
(barricades) on Whitland Ave. the day of the event on 4th July 2019 and our on-street parking policy during the hours of the event on the 4th• There are side streets of Leonard Avenue or Craighead Avenue
where visitors may park. But we ask that you make sure that no homeowners'
driveway is blocked. Please be courteous at all times of others who live in our neighborhood. Carden & Cantrell Avenue side streets are dead-ends and are very narrow - - please do not use these streets for parking unless you reside on these streets. We need to make sure that residents on these narrow dead-end
streets have access to emergency needs should that arise and parking along these two streets makes that very, very, difficult.
In the event of an emergency, please notify one of the hosts listed above who will be on-site and available during the days leading up to the event and the day of the event. We will assess the situation and take all measures necessary to insure the absolute safety and comfort of our guests.
Thank you!
Please have a safe & happy 4th July

A small group of about 10 showed up for the cleanup. We concluded that rainy days seem to bring out more people as we learned at the Easter Egg & Keg event. Never-the-less piles of branches and trash were put beside Rolland Road from Leonard to South Wilson. While loitering on the Carden bridge over Kingfisher Creek we learned there was a complaint about the
rough weathered railings on the bridge. After much discussion on how to fix this John Fleming came up wiith a brilliant idea.
Just turn the hand rails over and expose the smooth wood on the other side. It took about an hour for John and Tom Sherrill to pullout all the nails, filip the boads and hammer the nails back. Click on photos to enlarge.
Around 11:00AM Bob Lyons brought a truck down loaded with very good beer. At noon he unveiled a beef briskit cooked to perfection using his secret reciple and equipment. Others contributed beans and snacks. Download the video to see Bob in action.

Food: A potluck lunch will immediately follow at Mary Catherine Strobel park (at the pedestrian bridge at the end of Carden). WANA will provide a brisket and beverages.

New Slide Hill in Our Park
This large tree was uprooted by the storm and fell on the powerline to 230 Carden. Power was restored by NES. We now have a new slide hill in the park that the kids have discovered. A plan will be needed to remove the tree and root ball.
Carden Bridge Damage
In addition to the felled tree, a tree that was cut down a few weeks ago at 235 Leonard and and improperly dumped in the creek was floated by the flood downstream and hit the pedestrian bridge at the bottom of Carden. Neighbors cleaned the brush off the bridge but one board is missing so watch where you are going when you walk your dogs across.
Obviously we are going to need help to straighten this mess out. More to come . . .

So many of us love to wander along Rolland Road to look down at our beloved stream or gaze into the water from the Carden Avenue walking bridge to see the fish who live and thrive there. But next time you’re fish-gazing there’s something new to look for: a Streamside Salamander, also known as an Ambystoma barbouri.
Can You Find One?
Back in the sixties, six populations of this salamander were spotted in the Green Hills area probably in fishless small streams with no other streams feeding into them. Sadly, the salamanders are so rare these days, they’ve become a protected species, and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation would like to know if they still survive here. Rediscovery of this species would be an important find.
Look in Winter
A. barbouri lives hidden for much of the year, but are winter breeding. It’s only as they move towards their breeding site from mid-December to mid-March that they can be spotted. Though they’ll breed in streams that flow year-round, they are most often drawn to ephemeral streams. Think of the streambeds along the alleyway from Craighead to Leonard and along Rolland across from the Richmeade townhouses, streams that are dry in summer, but flow gently in wetter seasons.
Take Photos NOT Salamanders
You can identify these creatures by their grey and black speckles and by this photograph. If you see one, take a photo, please! And contact david.withers@tn.gov who is a zoologist with the Tennessee Natural Heritage Program to let him know. But please do not turn stones looking for the salamanders, or disturb their delicate habitats. We want to encourage this rare friend to think of our neighborhood as his own!

The Whitland Area Neighborhood Association will host "Dumpster Day" on Saturday, October 1st. The main feature of this day are neighborhood-wide yard sales from 8:00am to 1:00pm.
We make this easy for you by providing the following:
- Advertising the sales
- Posting signs that direct shoppers into the neighborhood
- Marking your sale with balloons at the curb
- Providing maps to help shoppers locate all of the sales
All you need to do is empty out those closets/attics/basements, price your items, set them out by 8:00am on Saturday, October 1st and sell, sell, sell!
To register your sale, please send an email to Bob Glenn at re.glenn@yahoo.com so your sale will be included on our neighborhood map of the sales so shoppers can find you!

The 4th July on Whitland Avenue event will take place beginning at 11AM on Monday, the 4th of July,2016. This is the 39th year of this annual fun-filled family celebration which involves a patriotic program with speaker, a wonderful musical presentation, fellowship,& family-styled picnic. If you've never attended before, we promise you will not be disappointed!
This notice also serves as a courtesy to inform you that on-street parking will be TEMPORARILY restricted in the area of Whitland Avenue on Monday, 4 July 2016 from approximately 9:00AM until 3:00PM that day. Please plan to park your vehicle in an alternate location on the event date. Any vehicles left in NO PARKING areas during the times listed above will be ticketed and towed at owners' expense. (please refer to attached map).
We begin setting up for this event on Saturday, the 2nd, and Sunday, the 3rd of July. Although the time is not certain,Crown Tent & Awning will be here sometime during the day (most likely afternoon) of July 2nd to install the large tent at the very small block between West End Avenue & Whitland Avenue at Carden. The tent will be there for the duration of the event and will not be removed by the tent company until the morning of Tuesday,July 5th. (see attached map please)
Blinker Lite provides us with barricades for street closures. They will be placed at West End Avenue so that no cars can enter Carden Avenue from West End where the tent is installed. There will also be barricades at the intersection of Whitland & Cantrell on the day of the event (4th July) and also at the intersection of Whitland & Craighead Avenue the day of the event. This is to insure the safety of all the guests,as the event primarily takes place between these blocks of on Whitland Avenue (please refer to attached map). The Whitland barricades are removed once the site is cleaned up and everyone has safely left the event. The barricades where the large tent is located (see map) will not be removed until the tent is removed (Tuesday AM,July 5, 2016)
We will have one port-a-potty available on-site (see map for its location). Since this is a neighborhood event, if you see anyone in need, please offer them assistance at your home.
We employ Metro Nashville Police Department Secondary Patrol unit for security at our event. There w:ill be two officers present at all times during the day of the event. Contact telephone number for their office is {615) 880-3278. The after-hours pager number is 615-963-0230 One of the officers on duty that day can assist you whenever needed.

Additional Comments about Parking
While this is a neighborhood event and most guests walk to the event,if you have relatives or close friends planning on attending, just make sure they are aware of the temporary street closure (barricades) on Whitland the day of the event on 4th July 2016 and our on-street parking policy during the hours of the event on the 4th. There are side streets of Leonard Avenue or Craighead Avenue where visitors may park. But we ask that you make sure that no homeowner's driveway is blocked. Please be courteous at all times of others who live in our neighborhood. Carden & Cantrell Avenue side streets are dead-ends and are very narrow -- please do not use these streets for parking unless you reside on these streets. We need to make sure that residents on these narrow dead-end streets have access to emergency needs should that arise and parking along these two streets makes that very, very, difficult.
In the event of an emergency, please notify one of the hosts listed above who will be on-site and available during the days leading up to the event and the day of the event. We will assess the situation and take all measures necessary to insure the absolute safety and comfort of our guests.
Thank you!
Please have a safe & happy 4th of July

Congratulate these neighbors when you see them!

The May 21 cleanup of Kingfisher Creek took place as scheduled. In spite of the event being advertised as annual it had not been done last year. Vegetation had grown up so high the creek could not be seen almost the entire way from Wilson to Bowling. What a difference a day makes to improve the appearance of the street when there is a crew of about 20 neighbors and friends to help. 80% of the work was completed in 2 hours. Click on photos to enlarge.
Lessons Learned
1. Unwanted papers are washed down Carden and Leonard during rain storms and wind up littering in near the creek. Please clean up these papers when delivered and advise the advertisers to take you off their list.
2. A significant number of filled doggy bags were tossed into the brush and not carried home. This is worse than not using bags where the waste disintegrates in a few days. Bags can take years. Photo too disgusting to show.
3. The use of woody plant pullers, borrowed from Warner Parks thanks to Melissa, made it much easier to pull up invasive species by the roots easily. This stops the plants from just growing right back. Left side photo shows one standing up. Right side shows Kevin in action.
4. Where the creek runs under Leonard, there is a dam of gravel which creates a pond that could provide a mosquito breeding ground. Committee Chair Bob is removing some of invasive plants at the bridge.
5. Committee Secretary Cyril provided and operated a chain saw which made quick work of some of the invasive trees and dead branches. Left photo right to left Lucius, Revell & Cyril
6. How to identify plant signs all along the route were a great help to workers to avoid the poison ivy.
7. It took three people to clean up around the Carden bridge.
8. Most of the crew worked the creekfrom Carden to Leonard. Amazingly there was very little trash to collect along Rolland Road (see 1 & 2 for the exceptions). Chairman Bob G. arranged to have one lane of the road blocked on the creek side. This was a brilliant move since we avoiding having to submit a comprehensive plan and employ an off duty policeman. A number of cones and lane blocked signs were rented. Traffic on the open lane proceeded with caution with very few exceptions. Being able to put so much brush on the road made it much easier. Thanks very much to the Rolland Residents for putting up with this. Metro is scheduled for Monday to take all the brush away.
9. At noon a potluck lunch was enjoyed by all. Two residents unable to attend the clean up kindly provided homemade BBQ pork tenderloin.

Google fiber is being installed in the Whitland Neighborhood. Crews were up installing the cable between Carden and Leonard a week ago. Google will leave door hangers before coming to do construction in this neighborhood. Those door hangers also include Google contact information should you have any questions or concerns during the construction process. This new fiber network will offer up to 100 or 1000 MB/S Internet, TV service with DVR, and Local and International Phone service. I learned at a presentation yesterday that once the fiber is brought to your home your existing coax and Ethernet wiring can be used within your home to connect your TV's and computers. Our good neighbor and Halloween costume prize winner, Martha Ivester, who is also Google fiber's Operations Leader was interviewed by the Tennessean and stressed that customer service "Is something we want to always deliver on. When we tell you someone is going to be there at 8:35 they are there at 8:35 ". What a refreshing statement to hear from a utility provider. More here or call 877-454-6959

The crown jewel of our extraordinary neighborhood was here long before the first house was erected. It's Kingfisher Creek, a rare taste of wild beauty in an urban world.
On May 21st from 8:30 12:00, come pitch in to help maintain our natural gem with the Annual Creek Clean-Up. Neighbors will join side by side to clear away brush, overgrown vegetation and garbage that can inhibit the creek's ability to renew itself. And as a reward there will music, a potluck lunch and barbecue.
It may be more than a month away but mark your calendars!
Also if you'd like to be part of a committee now forming to chart the course for creek maintenance and renewal, please contact Bob Glenn: re.glenn@yahoo.com

If you live in the city block defined by Carden, Whitland, and Leonard your power was out for 23 hours. This was no simple outage usually fixed in a few minutes. A high voltage line snapped and was lying on the road on Carden. Nashville Electric must have had a lot of failures due to the high winds and was unable to get to Whitland until Thursday afternoon, April 7th. It took 3 hours to fix the problem and restring new lines.
Power was restored around 4 pm. At least one neighbor was seen buying dry ice to save the food in her freezer. It was tough to watch all the other homes across the street with lights blazing while we had to resort to flashlights, candles and oil lamps.

We are conducting a brief survey about activities and events sponsored by the Whitland Area Neighborhood Association. Please take a moment to share your feedback through this survey. Neighborhood photographers were out along side the Rolland Rd creek after the rain on Sunday March 13. Adele Tyler took the pair of ducks on the left. Bob Duthie took the other two photos. It was amazing to find the pair of ducks enjoying the rain garden (right photo) at the bottom of Carden Ave. Will we have baby ducks soon? Click on each photo to enlarge.

A TRIBUTE by David J. Wasserstein
O say can you see by the dawn's early light
What descended on Whitland all through the night?
It was coming along to the fourth of July,
And the spirits of all the citizens were high!
Another year and another day of celebration
To feast the independence of our nation.
The summer was in highest gear
For here was yet another year.
The weather too was playing its part
And entering fast into each one's heart.
The heat was lower than we could remember
It was not of July but rather November.
Humidity was there almost none
Despite the fierceness of the sun.
The preparations had all been made
A feast was made and also a parade.
They called the mayor - he said he would come
The band, the children too in sum
All Whitland every girl and boy
Made plans to feel enormous joy.
We went to bed on Wednesday the Third
The weather forecast none had heard.
But when we awoke on our sacred day
We thought we were going to have to pray
For during the night with all its might
Rain poured down and created a plight.
All was wet, few dared go out
To face the rain and sing and shout
To hail the day and dance along
To join our hands in feast and song.
We walked along our long straight street
With dampened heads and soaking feet,
And saw the folks of our festive Committee
And all we could feel inside was pity,
For they had worked for months on end
In order a message to all to send.
Yet for now the rain put a damper on all
All was washed out, we felt a pall.
But say, what comes but a mail from Denise!
We read it in fear, but we feel a release
The feast will go on! Rain cannot diminish us.
The feast will go on! The day is too serious.
A hurray along Whitland for all who so gave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
