A TRIBUTE by David J. Wasserstein
O say can you see by the dawn's early light
What descended on Whitland all through the night?
It was coming along to the fourth of July,
And the spirits of all the citizens were high!
Another year and another day of celebration
To feast the independence of our nation.
The summer was in highest gear
For here was yet another year.
The weather too was playing its part
And entering fast into each one's heart.
The heat was lower than we could remember
It was not of July but rather November.
Humidity was there almost none
Despite the fierceness of the sun.
The preparations had all been made
A feast was made and also a parade.
They called the mayor - he said he would come
The band, the children too in sum
All Whitland every girl and boy
Made plans to feel enormous joy.
We went to bed on Wednesday the Third
The weather forecast none had heard.
But when we awoke on our sacred day
We thought we were going to have to pray
For during the night with all its might
Rain poured down and created a plight.
All was wet, few dared go out
To face the rain and sing and shout
To hail the day and dance along
To join our hands in feast and song.
We walked along our long straight street
With dampened heads and soaking feet,
And saw the folks of our festive Committee
And all we could feel inside was pity,
For they had worked for months on end
In order a message to all to send.
Yet for now the rain put a damper on all
All was washed out, we felt a pall.
But say, what comes but a mail from Denise!
We read it in fear, but we feel a release
The feast will go on! Rain cannot diminish us.
The feast will go on! The day is too serious.
A hurray along Whitland for all who so gave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The Halloween party is held annually on or about October 31st at the park beside Kingfisher Creek at the bottom of Carden Ave. There is food, drinks, and contests for the best costumes. It's fun for all ages.

This is by far the biggest event each year attended by 1,000s. At the 2012 event when this panoramic photo was taken, Senator Bob Corker was one of the speakers. Following a concert and a few speaches a massive 6 lane pot luck lunch is held. As if that wasn't enough the best hot dogs you have ever eaten are served at a barbeque managed by Whitland Residents. The event has been held for over 20 years. Click here for a video of the reading of the Declaration of Independance.

It was September 25-26, 2010 that our most recent Whitland Neighborhood Home Tour was held. An entire website was developed for this event which has been retired and no longer available.
The following is the content from the page which appeared on this website and is preserved here for future Home Tour committees.
This year's sixth annual home tour promises to be even better than ever with several locations being readied for tours. The Whitland neighborhood, located directly south of West End Avenue between Bowling and Wilson Avenues, is once again inviting the public to walk its tree-lined streets and tour several homes and the always a hit - - Fire Hall #17.
The Whitland neighborhood was once part of the Peach Blossom plantation, which became known as Whitland Farms in the late 1800s. Part of the land was subdivided and the neighborhood was created in the early 20th Century. Adding to the rich historical presence of the neighborhood is the former burial site of Charles Dickinson, son-in-law to Capt Joseph Erwin (original Peach Blossom builder & owner), who was killed in 1806 by Andrew Jackson in a duel. His remains were re-interred in the Nashville City Cemetery in June 2010.
The neighborhood was also once home to entertainers Dinah Shore and Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann in the popular sitcom "Gilligan's Island," as well as a host of other well-known figures such as senators, mayors, poets, entertainers and sports figures.
"There has been extensive renovation to many of the homes in the neighborhood in recent years, and the character and charm of the neighborhood has actually been preserved and enhanced by these renovations," stated Amy Dennison, co-chair of Whitland's home tour committee. "Our neighborhood is excited to open its homes to Nashville." The wide, tree-lined boulevard of Whitland Avenue and its quiet, family-friendly side streets boast an architectural diversity that ranges from stately mansions to comfortable bungalows. Touring the neighborhood is reminiscent of a time when trolley cars were the primary means of commuting to downtown Nashville. A bus will provide free transportation throughout the neighborhood during the tour.
Children with parental supervision are also welcome to play at the playground of Blakemore Children's Center, located in the neighborhood. A Patrons' Party will be held on Friday, September 24th to kick-off the event. Home tour admission and tickets can be purchased at any of the open homes on the days of the tour for $15 or 2 for $25. Tickets for children under 12 are $8. Advance home tour tickets can also be purchased at a discounted price of $12 each through September 24th at Davis Kidd Booksellers, 2121 Greenhill Village Drive at the Green Hills Mall and at the Harris Teeter located in Belle Meade Theatre Building.
Please refer to http://www.whitlandhometour.org/ for the most up to date information about the 2010 Home Tour!

Friends,
The linked document is the Memorandum of Understanding offered by MBA to our neighborhood as a commitment following our conversations since last fall. Many of you have been part of those conversations. This document has been executed by MBA and, after review by the Whitland Area Neighborhood Association Steering Committee, if approved, will be executed by our President. This document applies only to our neighborhood association. The people along Kippalong have a separate document.
Please review the document and send any comments to Chad Greer at chadgreer@comcast.net. Please copy me as well so I can work to resolve issues that arise. My e-mail is cyril.stewart@vanderbilt.edu.
The bill to allow MBA to go forward with the closure of Brighton has been introduced and is scheduled to be heard in second reading at the Metro Council on March 16th. Note that this is not a public hearing so Councilman Holleman would like to hear from us, and hopefully have the Memorandum of Understanding executed before then.
Thanks so much to our Councilman and all our neighbors who have labored to make this project beneficial to the neighborhoods as well as to MBA!
Cyril

Thank you Weaver Family for hosting a fabulous party this year! Thank you Patron's!

Good neighbor Karen Tabor took these great pictures of the Eastern Screech owl who returned to Whitland - - same tree - - to raise her two little ones. Thank you Karen!

Neighbors gathered together on a Sunday afternoon in October to enjoy some great chili and cornbread and witness the dedication of the first granite bench installed in the neighborhood by the Whitland Area Neighborhood Association.
The association chose to honor Pat & Dan Burton for their longstanding support of our neighborhood and for their generosity and hard work, particularly when the community is welcomed with open arms each year at the 4th of July on Whitland celebration.
The granite bench is inscribed and the Burtons were grateful and honored by this gift. Enjoy a few pictures from the lovely day in October!
