A neighborhood tradition

The Fourth of July is upon us and the Whitland neighborhood is preparing to celebrate with our annual block party. We will have music from what we refer to as "the greatest band in America" as well as our famous hotdogs. It is a treat every year to celebrate our community and country together. Below you will find the official invitation to the event, an invitation to become Patriots and help support the event, and important logistical information about the day of.

Important Logistical Information

This notice contains as much information as possible about the 4th July on Whitland Avenue event which will take place beginning at approximately 11 AM on Saturday the 4th of July, 2026. This is the 49th year of this annual fun-filled family celebration which involves a patriotic program with speaker, a wonderful musical presentation, fellowship, & a kids’ parade. If you have never attended before, I can promise that you will not be disappointed!

This notice also serves as a courtesy to inform you that on-street parking will be TEMPORARILY restricted in the area of Whitland Avenue on Saturday, 4 July 2026 from approximately 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM that day.  Please plan to park your vehicle in an alternate location on the event date (your driveway, a friend’s driveway with their permission, one of the sidestreets that is not in the event footprint, etc).  Any vehicles left in NO PARKING areas during the times listed above will be ticketed and towed at owners’ expense.

If a homeowner on the side streets of Cantrell, Carden, Leonard and Craighead need to exit during the event on Saturday, 4 July 2026 during the hours of 8 AM until 2 PM, we will make sure you may do so with the direction of our security team. You may always exit the neighborhood via South Wilson Blvd, Leonard Avenue and Bowling Avenues.

We begin setting up for this event on Saturday morning, the 4th of July 2026 around 8 AM. We will NOT have a food tent or expect anyone to bring food. We will serve water and soft drinks and will have some awesome hot dogs later in the day.

Comprehensive Security provides us with barricades for street closures. They will be placed at Carden Avenue/Whitland intersection and Whitland/Leonard Ave intersection to insure that no vehicles can enter from West End Avenue during the hours of 8 AM until 2:00 PM that day of the 4th. There will also be barricades at the intersection of Whitland & Cantrell on the day of the event (4th July) and also at the intersection of Whitland & Craighead Avenue the day of the event. This is to insure the safety of all the guests, as the event primarily takes place between these blocks on Whitland Avenue (please refer to attached map). All barricades are removed once the site is cleaned up and everyone has safely left the event.

We also employ Covert Results security this year for the safety of our guests and security at our event. There will be two officers present at all times during the day of the event. Contact telephone number for their office is (615) 861-1680.  Either of the officers on duty that day can assist you whenever needed.

Additional Comments about Parking

Please remember, on-street parking will be TEMPORARILY restricted in a 4-block area (from Craighead to Cantrell Avenue on WHITLAND AVE) on Saturday, 4th July, 2026. While this is a neighborhood event and most guests walk to the event, if you have relatives or close friends planning on attending, just make sure they are aware of the temporary street closure (barricades) on Whitland Ave. the day of the event on Saturday, 4th July 2026 and our on-street parking policy during the hours of the event on the 4th. The morning of the event, we will be placing a notice on cars parked along the 3-block area of Whitland Avenue (event footprint) asking you to move your car from on-street parking. You may return your car to the street at 2 PM when the event clean up has ended, barricades are removed and the event has ended. There are side streets of Leonard Avenue or Craighead Avenue where visitors who do not live in the neighborhood may park. But we ask that you make sure that no homeowners’ driveway is blocked. Please be courteous at all times of others who live in our neighborhood. Carden & Cantrell Avenue side streets are dead-ends and are very narrow - - please do not use these streets for parking unless you reside on these streets. We need to make sure that residents on these narrow dead-end streets have access to emergency response vehicles should that arise and parking along these two streets makes that very, very, difficult.

In the event of an emergency, call 911. You may also reach the committee by contacting David or Tessa Stewart, chairs , or David Fox, host, at the numbers above. We will assess the situation and take all measures necessary to insure the absolute safety and comfort of our guests.

Thank you!

Please have a safe & happy 4th July
